Frequently asked questions:

* Is my child old enough to play?
While Pre-K typically refers to 4-year olds, 3-year olds are welcome to play in our program if you feel they are developmentally prepared for this structured soccer program. Questions to ask yourself include 1. Will they participate independently? 2. How well do they interact in group activities? 3. Can they adhere to practice/game guidelines and routines?

Uniform/Equipment: NLSC provides a team jersey included with your registration.  Additional player-provided uniform requirements are shorts/pants, shin guards, tennis shoes/soccer cleats, soccer ball, and other clothing as appropriate for the weather. Soccer balls sizes vary and should be size 3 for PreK, K, and 1st Grade; size 4 for 2nd grade and older.

Coaches: The recreation program relies completely on volunteer parent coaches and all training is supplied, no experience is necessary. Each team will ideally be assigned two coaches so they can support one another and switch off tasks. Coaches will receive reimbursement for the cost of one-half the fall registration fee at the end of the season upon fulfilling season coaching requirements to include background study, brief online concussion training, and SafeSport training, attendance at coach meeting as well as practices, games, and fall Super Soccer Saturday. Coaches should sign up for this opportunity during registration. Volunteer coaches do not need to be soccer experts; they just need to be willing and available. Our club offers multiple resources to educate and train our coaches and players. For families needing to fulfill the travel soccer volunteer bond requirement, coaching recreation soccer fulfills the bond requirement and can be applied in place of the reimbursement.

Team Formation: Teams are formed based on the child's age and random assignments are used to form teams.

Friend Requests: Requests are taken into account primarily for special circumstances including 1) co-coaching arrangements 2)siblings/relatives . Buddy requests are not guaranteed. All other players are assigned to teams based on our team formation process.

Practices: All practices are outside and children must dress appropriately. While NLS will monitor and adjust practices and games according to the club's official weather policy, parents always reserve judgement to determine when to send their children to soccer. Cancelled activities are not rescheduled.

Games: Team rosters and season schedules will be available no later than a week prior to the start of the season. Games are played in all sorts of weather (warm, cold, windy, rain, snow) unless NLSC cancels according to the weather policy. Should soccer be cancelled, an email blast will be sent to the parent email on file with your child's registration; the club's Facebook page will also post information.

General guidelines for recreational soccer:
  • Team on one side of the field, parents/spectators on the opposite side.
  • No jewelry. Period. Earrings must be removed.
  • Eyeglasses should be secured with a strap.
  • Please instruct your child to avoid hanging from the goals, while totally tempting this is very dangerous as the goal could tip and injure a child.
  • An adult must be present and accountable for each child at all times. Coaches are not responsible for children who are not their own.  Unattended children are a safety concern and may be reported to city emergency responders.
  • If the club cannot form four teams in an age group, the club reserves the right to cancel the age group. Players will receive a full refund.
  • If a team does not have a volunteer coach, the team may be disbanded and the players reassigned to another team. This reduces playing time for all children.
  • The club attempts to schedule referees for all games 2nd grade and older. However, coaches and parents should be prepared to provide basic game services (timekeeping, ball in/out of play) to their teams if needed.
  • Refunds will not be given after the start of the season.

Are you debating whether travel soccer may be right for your child?

  • Our goal as a club is to provide soccer to all children who want to play soccer. We do offer travel programming at multiple levels of competition and children should not be concerned if they are “good enough” for travel; many families find the fall season to be the best season to try travel soccer as it is more comparable in price and schedule to our rec program than the summer travel season.
Check out this brief perspective about rec vs travel soccer. Make sure to check out the comments for additional viewpoints. Another perspective is here.

Please note that refunds won't be available after Aug. 15 as teams are already being formed and uniforms have been ordered.
