Anoka Boy’s Soccer capped off a magical season by beating Wayzata 2-0 in the Minnesota State High School League class 2A state tournament. The championship game was held at the Metrodome on 11/1/07. This marks the first time in school history that the Anoka Boy’s won the state soccer tournament.
The 2007 Anoka High School varsity tournament team 22-man roster proudly featured 19 current players from Northern Lights Soccer Club. Our U18 Premier "River Rats" rostered 11, the U17 C2 "NLS Alliance" rostered 4, the U16 C2 "River Raiders" rostered 1 and our U15 Premier "Riverhounds" rostered 3. Some of the "River Rats" players may look familiar to you.....these were the boys that coached the soccer camp in June of 2007.
The 2007 Varsity squad not only won the state tournament but it was done very convincingly, conceding 11 goals all season while scoring 76. The high powered, explosive attack that came at the opponent’s from every direction was balanced and supported by an rarely penetrated defensive line and superior goaltending. Game after game it was apparent that this was a team that was not built around superstars but rather a group of unselfish, well-bonded young men that had a common vision and they didn’t care about credit; they just got the job done.
Peaking in performance in the final 6 games of the season, Anoka recorded 3 shutouts in the section 7AA tournament by beating Eveleth 8-0, Forest Lake 6-0 and Coon Rapids 1-0. In the state tournament they recorded victories over St. Cloud Apollo 1-0, Eden Prairie 2-1 and a 2-0 shutout over Wayzata in the State Championship game.
The Anoka boy’s also took the entire country by surprise when they achieved a midwest regional ranking of #1 and a national ranking of #6 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America with an undefeated record of 21-0-2 and 16 shutouts. The boy’s were also proud recipients of awards for 2 All-State players, 1 All-State honorable mention, 10 All-Conference and 4 All-Tournament Team honors.
Congratulations boy’s, well done.
