2nd grade developmental program (boys and girls)

Our goal for second grade will be to teach the game. We will focus on skill development and fundamentals and less on winning and stats. In order to accomplish this, here is the proposed set up for our second-grade players:

  • All games and scrimmages are 4-on-4 so players can touch the ball more and the court is less crowded with players.
  • Teams will still play 12 games but will not have a tournament. The first 2 games will be scrimmages with 1 referee and 1 coach from each team on the court. We will not keep score for the scrimmages. The remaining games will run like normal games with 2 referees who will also help to coach up the players.
  • 8-foot hoops with 27.5 inch balls and 8 four minute periods.
  • No free throws. No stealing (not even in the lane).
  • While scores will be tracked, we will not be logging games and keeping track of records for the teams. All teams will get a participation medal for their players at the end of the season

3rd grade program (boys and girls)

While we want to keep this grade from getting too competitive (keeping the focus on development of players as many will still be new to the game) we also want to be helping kids get ready to play travel basketball. The season will be designed to facilitate this effort:

  • All games and scrimmages are 5-on-5 so players can start to adjust to a normal style of game and kids interested in travel can adjust to playing with more people on the court.
  • Teams will play 11 games plus 1 scrimmage that has 1 referee and 1 coach from each team on the court. This is mostly to assist new-to-basketball players. The remaining games will run like normal games with 2 referees who will also help to coach up the players.
  • 9-foot hoops with 27.5 inch balls and 8 four minute periods.
  • No free throws.
  • No stealing for first 6 games, ball can be tied up in the lane though.
  • Stealing is allowed for final 6 games plus the tournament.
  • The league will keep track of records and there will be a single-elimination tournament at the end of the season.
