Tryout Process and Timeline:

Pre-Tryout Practice: This is intended for 9U and players who have never attended tryouts before to get a feel for what tryouts are like. Current ARAA Traveling Coaches will run players through the drills that they will see at tryouts.  Players should come with all equipment required to play, including bat, helmet, glove and athletic protective cup.

Tryouts: Players will complete a series of drills, including hitting, throwing, fielding and pop flies that will be scored by evaluators from Flexx. Coaches and parents are not allowed to watch tryouts and must drop their player off. Players should come with all equipment required to play, including bat, helmet, glove and athletic protective cup. No clothing with your name on it or Anoka Baseball hats or uniforms should be worn for tryouts.

Playing up: Players who desire to “play up” must petition to the Traveling Director before tryouts. The Traveling Director will review with the Team Selection Committee and Baseball Commissioner on a case-by-case basis. Playing up is not endorsed or encouraged by the Association for the safety of the players. . Eight year olds can tryout to play for 9U without the need to be reviewed.

All players interested in traveling must attend tryouts. If you are unable to make tryouts, please contact TJ Lyon, Director of Traveling, at lyont34@gmail.com.

General Traveling Team Expectations:
Practice: Traveling teams typically offer optional batting practices during the winter months, starting as early as January. These are usually only once a week. Offseason practice is a cost incurred by the team outside of registration fees. Teams look to start practicing in earnest at the beginning of April. These practices are usually indoors until outdoor fields are cleared for use by the Cities (usually the beginning of May).

League Play:  Games will start in the beginning to the middle of May. Once league play starts, you can expect to have 3-4+ baseball events each week (game or practice). Traveling teams will have approx. 16 league games through MYAS (Minnesota Youth Athletic Services). The schedule is intended for half of these games to be home, half to be away. MYAS sets the league districts, but typically the teams within the district are within 20-40 miles of Ramsey. League play is included in registration fees.

Tournaments: Traveling teams will also play in 4-5 weekend tournaments throughout the year, as decided by each team's head coach. These tournaments are usually Friday, Saturday and Sunday and can include 3-6 games. Tournament play is in addition to the 16 league games. Some tournaments offer a bid to a state tournament depending on where you place. State tournaments are usually in mid- to end- of July. Tournament play is an additional cost incurred to the team outside of registration fees.

Fees: Registration will be required for players after teams are announced.  2026 registration fees are under review. In addition to registration fees, teams will typically collect $200-$300 for a slush fund account to be used for tournament registration, indoor practice facilities, etc. (as agreed upon by the team). Any funds left at the end of the season are split and returned to the players.

Flexx Account Setup

For the second year tryout evaluations are being performed by an independent company, Flexx, that offers testing and analytic services for baseball and softball players. Once the evaluations are complete parents will have access to a "Player Locker" that will give a detailed report about the player evaluation. Follow the link below to complete your account setup. Returning players can use their login from last year.
